Sticky Thing hosts virtual benefit for Oakland businesses
In the summer of 2020, at a moment of national reckoning and local heartbreak, Sticky Thing Music co-founder Mike Blankenship joined forces with fellow Oakland artist Dame Drummer for a special virtual concert in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Hosted by San Jose Jazz, the performance aimed to raise funds for Black-owned businesses in Oakland impacted by both the COVID-19 pandemic and property damage following protests for racial justice.
The concert was more than a performance — it was a love letter to Oakland. With both artists rooted in the city's creative and cultural landscape, the goal was to uplift the community that has given so much to their work and lives. Proceeds from the show went directly toward recovery efforts and rebuilding support for Black business owners in the East Bay.
“Oakland has always fueled our music,” said Mike. “This concert was about giving something back — using what we do best to pour into the community that’s held us up.”
The virtual set featured original compositions, soulful improvisation, and moments of powerful reflection. It became a space for healing, expression, and solidarity — showing how music can be both a mirror and a balm.
