“Striking A Chord” with San Francisco State University
Sticky Thing co-founder Mike Blankenship was recently profiled in the Spring/Summer 2025 issue of SFSU Magazine in a feature titled “Striking a Chord.” The article spotlights Mike’s journey from student to sought-after composer, producer, and music educator — tracing how his time at San Francisco State University helped shape the career he's built today.
The piece explores Mike’s work as a performer, his years of touring and studio collaboration, and the eventual launch of Sticky Thing Music — a creative house specializing in original music for film, commercials, education, and beyond. But more than a résumé, the profile emphasizes Mike’s commitment to access and equity in the music industry, particularly for young artists of color.
“So many musicians have the talent but not the network,” Mike shares in the article. “That’s something we’re trying to change — by opening doors and keeping them open.”
The feature also highlights his work with Yeah, Art!, his nonprofit arts education initiative, as well as recent projects with the Oakland Symphony, SFMOMA, and The Recording Academy.
Being featured by his alma mater is more than a nod to past achievements — it’s a celebration of staying connected to community, to purpose, and to the belief that music can change the game.
