Sticky Thing arranges an orchestral tribute to Aretha Franklin

In January 2025, Sticky Thing Music reunited with Living Jazz and the Oakland Symphony community to honor the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, with a stunning orchestral tribute. Part of the 22nd annual In the Name of Love: A Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the performance took place at the historic Paramount Theatre in Oakland — uniting music and activism in celebration of two icons who shaped American culture and civil rights.

Sticky Thing co-founder Mike Blankenship arranged one of Aretha’s most powerful songs for full orchestra, “Until You Come Back To Me,” brought to life by Awesome Orchestra and conducted by Dave Möschler, and vocals by SoLauren. The result was a sweeping, emotional performance that stayed true to the soul of Aretha while expanding it with lush, cinematic textures.

“Aretha’s voice has always felt larger than life,” said Mike. “Our goal wasn’t to overpower it with strings or brass — it was to create space for that voice to rise, to resonate differently but just as deeply.”

The event featured standout vocal performances by Tiffany Austin, Martin Luther, RyanNicole, and more — each paying tribute to Aretha’s enduring impact and the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy.
